We all make mistakes growing a bookkeeping business. Have you forgiven yourself?

A couple of weeks ago when I was travelling to Hobart for the last seminar in the 7 Secrets of Growing Your Bookkeeping Business roadshow I stuffed up. My biggest fear was that I would miss the plane so I planned everything very carefully. Our wonderful p.a. Cristina, had checked me in, I booked a taxi the night before and set the alarm so that was ready in time. Everything went perfectly until I got to the airport.

I arrived at 6.30am thinking I had an hour to spare and went to the bag drop. I scanned the boarding pass and was surprised to see a message saying that the flight had closed. I thought they had made a mistake until I looked carefully at the boarding pass and realised that I was the one who made the mistake and boarding was at 6.40am not 7.40am! To cut a long story short I was able to book a flight an hour later with Jetstar and made it to the venue with 5 minutes to spare!

I’m very experienced at beating myself up. I called Pete Cook while waiting for the plane to apologise and he could tell that I was upset and he said “I’m not getting off the phone until you forgive yourself.” He left me no other choice or I would have missed the next flight! So I did.

When you are reflecting on what you have achieved in 2012 you may also be beating yourself up about mistakes you made along the way or goals you didn’t reach. Before the year has ended forgive yourself. Learn from your mistakes, set your goals for 2013 and celebrate what you have achieved.
Happy New Year everyone!

  1. Hi Debbie,

Love this post – I have just been working out my plans/goals for 2013 and yes need not to beat myself up for mistakes or goals that didn’t quite get reached.
Looking forward to 2013 with the Pure Bookkeeping team and my goal is to follow the Pure Bookkeeping Road Map. All printed and ready to tick off.

  2. Hi Debbie

I can relate to your experience so many times, so I appreciate your sharing this and I will have to forgive myself before the year end.

Thank you have a Happy New Year 2013.

  3. Thanks Debbie, your insights are truely inspirational & to maintain the contact by email at this time of year shows true dedication & I appreciate the seasons greetings-anthony

  4. So true. We need to be reminded to forgive ourselve and others cause it is so easy to slip into unforgiveness and reap the consequences.
And why are we all working, answering eamils and not taking a break….

  5. I enjoy reading you ‘tweet’ each week, I find it very grounding. Even when I feel that I am so far behind, I always read the email. Afterwards I feel calmer and more prepared to carry on. The content may not be exactly relevant but alot of the advice becomes that way as it is more diverse than what is written so I thank you, I do appreciate what you are doing.
