Create an inspiring Vision statement to keep your bookkeeping business on track

I was mentoring a bookkeeper this week who was going through a difficult time with her family. There was no question in her mind that she had to prioritise them and deal with the issue however she couldn’t hide the fact that she felt disappointed that she had to put her plans to grow her bookkeeping business on hold.

The reality is that from time to time life gets in the way of our business plans.  Denis Waitley said “Expect the best, plan for the worst and prepare to be surprised.” Just when your marketing strategies are taking hold and you’re about to put on another bookkeeper something unexpected happens in your life to knock your business plans off track.

That’s why it’s so important to be clear about what needs to be prioritised at any given point in time by having a strong personal mission statement and an inspiring business vision statement. Stephen Covey says that a “mission and vision statement is more powerful more significant, more influential, than the baggage of the past, or even the accumulated noise of the present”.

So when life comes at you and knocks you off your feet, a vision statement for your business is what will get you back on track.  It will inspire you to pick yourself up, dust yourself off and continue from where you left off.

Do you need inspiration? What’s your vision statement for your business?

Love to hear your thoughts, you can leave your comments below.

  1. Hi Deb, I think I would love you guys. Your manner is professional, clear and most importantly, caring. I don’t think I am at the stage of benefiting from attending your seminar, as I am currently not working as a bookkeeper. In July I finished my Cert IV in Advanced Bookkeeping through TAFE, but I’m at crossroads at the moment not sure what path to take in some major life hurdles. If I was sure that I wanted to start a business here, I would certainly want to attend.
    Thank you,
    Anna.

  2. I Really like this Article. Every Industry need bookkeeper for your Financial Record so that bookkeeper have a lot of challenge to how to clear financial record. in the bookkeeping business we have required to good strategy and good business plan so that our business will grow more.

  3. I agree whole heartedly… Recently I was begining to wonder if it was all worth it but then I thought I owed it to myself to give it my all. I have put alot of work into laying foundations for not just my knowledge base but also my business in general and I have thought alot about what my vision & mission statements are and I came up with the following:
    Vision Statement:
To be the most trusted and valued source of support to our clients, their people and our people…
    Mission Statement:
To provide support and knowledge to our clients surrounding their business finances and goals by having highly skilled people that listen, remove confusion, fear and uncertainty and replace it with clarity, freedom and control.

Business is going gangbusters now and I am ready to hire :-)

I have also met some other wonderful bookkeepers and we have formed a great network. There is certainly enough work out there for everyone so if people can help each other I think this is invaluable…

    Happy bookkeeping peoples :-)

  4. Hi Deb,
So good to hear a “word” from you. I was just thinking this week that it has been a while since we had one.
I agree when we know where we are headed and keep that in focus we can stay on course. I would like to add that you also help to keep me focused. With your “words” and tips when I get stuck.
    Thank You
    Irene

  5. Deb, totally agree. Coming from a military flying background every flight started with “today’s mission is” and focused every one in on the job at hand. Always distractions but when you have a clearly defined mission it draws you back to the task at hand.

  6. I am about to advertise for a Bookkeeper at Box Hill & I know it will be a lot of extra time & effort. And that despite careful planning & preparation, anything could happen to upset my plans. I feel & know the pressure & stress will be enormous.
